India: Dharavi
One of the largest slums in all the World, Dharavi is home to thousands of industries, including leather, pottery, textiles, food production, and a major hub of recycling; there is over US$600m of turnover. When Westerners leave their refrigerator or AC on the curb in their suburban neighborhood it may very well end up here, in Dharavi, being dis-assembled by an elderly person or a young child. Currently slated for re-development that will move some of the residents (pre 2000) to vertical slums. The work was set to begin in mid-2010 but as of yet nearly nothing has been accomplished. Most residents oppose this plan as they feel their communities will be disrupted and their businesses destroyed.
